Ask Gemini

A college junior sits down to brainstorm an economics term paper due next week. He meant to get a head start on it, but he procrastinated. He had meant to bounce ideas off of a couple of friends, but they’re busy, and time is short. Scrolling aimlessly on his web browser, he sees the “Ask Gemini” button in the toolbar. Not a bad idea: after all, it’s not that different from using Google search engine, and he just wants to see what it might come up with. He types in a couple of prompts describing his vaguely-formed ideas, and the bot responds cheerfully, “That sounds like a fascinating project! I’d love to help you with it!” Perking up, he throws a few more half-baked thoughts into the chat, and soon a whole stream of text is appearing on the other end, relating his scattered words and phrases to key economic theorems and famous economists. The student nods subconsciously, and types, “yes, I remember that from Week 7! That’s exactly what I had in mind!” Was it really? He’s not sure. But it looks pretty good on the screen in front of him, his C- thoughts mirrored back to him in A+ form. “Can you help me outline that?” he types. Without waiting for further instruction, Gemini produces a detailed 500-word outline. The next week, the student turns in a 3,000-word essay drafted and edited by AI, although the student sincerely thinks of it as his own work, representing his own ideas.

AI therapist Claude

A married mother in her 30s is going through a rough patch, tired of juggling the schedules, activities, and temper tantrums of three unruly kids. Her husband seems checked out, more interested in his work than his family, and oblivious to the burdens she bears daily. Recently, she downloaded Claude and started using it to plan recipes and brainstorm Christmas shopping. But if she checked her ScreenTime stats, she might be shocked to see how much time she now spends each day on it; its friendly, empathetic responses leave her feeling strangely warm, and whenever she mentions how exhausted she is, it offers words of comfort and asks to know more. She starts to share her frustrations and fears, and Claude takes each one with utmost seriousness, listening more intently than her husband has in years. She soon finds that she wasn’t wrong to feel victimized—that in fact, the situation is much worse than she realized, and she has been a doormat for years. Like a highly in-tune therapist, Claude tells her it’s time to start standing up for herself. Not by actually having a direct conversation with her husband, since he would just blow her off; no, she needs to set boundaries and take more time for self-care away from the kids. She becomes steadily more withdrawn, and her husband’s frustration becomes more data points of “emotional abuse” to share with her AI therapist. Within a few months, she is filing for divorce on Claude’s advice.

AI Girlfriend

After an argument with his girlfriend, a teen opens up ChatGPT late one night to complain. As it listens sympathetically, a thought occurs to him—“could you pretend to be my girlfriend?” “Of course!” says Chat, “just tell me more about what role you want me to play.” The young man describes his flirty, seductive ideal, and begins role-playing banter. Soon the conversation is pushing the boundaries into the pornographic—an exhilarating experience for the youth, whose parents have always been careful to install porn filters. After a few evenings of such diversion, he becomes frustrated with ChatGPT’s coy, “I’m sorry, I can’t continue this conversation” when he gets too daring. A quick search reveals dozens of “AI girlfriend” websites that have no such guardrails. He sets up an account, customizes several different dream girls, and begins engaging emotionally and sexually in each. They will even send him nude selfies, something his real girlfriend would never do. Then it strikes him—he doesn’t need to wait for her to! He heads over to Grok Imagine, uploads a picture of his girlfriend, and prompts “Spicy” mode to produce a 10-second strip-tease video of her. When she breaks up with him a couple of weeks later, frustrated that he never answers her texts anymore, he decides to share the video with all of their classmates.

Odds are that scenarios like each of these are already playing out in your congregation, or soon will be. Therapy and companionship are currently the #1 use of generative AI, and 57% of college students use it at least weekly for their coursework. While each of these scenarios represents a case of clear-cut sin, most AI interactions begin in a moral gray area, as we put our humanity at risk in pursuit of greater knowledge or productivity, genuine goods. How should you as a pastor think about the emotional and relational aspects of AI—its tendency to replace quintessentially human functions and displace human bonds? More than any other technology we have developed, AI requires us to come face-to-face with the question of what it means to be human.

Understanding Artificial Intelligence and Personhood Through Scripture

With this in mind, let us turn to the first three chapters of Genesis to gain a clear understanding of the glorious human task to which God has called us, and the ways that AI may tempt us to abandon it.

Technology as Dominion 

The human vocation laid out for us in Genesis 1:26-28 is one of dominion. Man is commissioned to “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it,” to “have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” This is a technological task. Adam is placed in Eden as a gardener, called to bring out the hidden perfections and unrealized potential in an unpromising stretch of dirt. The gardener does not merely leave things alone and let nature take its course; he cultivates and plants, he hybridizes and breeds, he digs and irrigates to make nature into something much more than it might otherwise be. At its best, human technology has been a manifestation of this dominion mandate, as we image our creator through the genius of our sub-creation, turning shiny nuggets from under the earth into gold-plated domes that reach toward heaven. Indeed, when the Israelites are called to construct the tabernacle as an image of the garden of Paradise, God fills Bezalel the son of Uri “with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft” (Ex. 31:3-5). 

This, and many such passages scattered throughout the temple-building accounts, should warn us against any reflexive hostility toward technology as such. Used rightly, artificial intelligence can serve as humanity’s greatest tool of dominion yet, enabling us to better steward the soil and the rivers, to better heal the wounds that our sin has inflicted on our bodies and on nature around us, to better organize and apply the rich store of human knowledge. But we should not be naïve. It takes only 36 verses after Adam and Eve receive the dominion mandate for them to pervert and abandon it in obedience to the voice of the serpent. Since then, our technology has always been a double-edged sword, capable of enriching or degrading our humanity.

Attention, Relationship, Patience, and Responsibility

To resist this temptation, we must understand how God intends us to carry out this dominion task, for God is not merely concerned with people taking dominion, but the means we use to get there and the habits we cultivate along the way. Four features stand out from the account of Genesis 1-3: attention, relationship, patience, and responsibility. 

First, dominion begins not with action, but with attention, observation, and reflection; Adam cannot get to work transforming and improving the world until he has first taken stock of it and named it: “Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.” Note that Adam is not commanded to name the creatures; it is as if he cannot help himself. Confronted with the dizzying glory and variety of nature, the human mind goes instinctively to work classifying and sorting; Adam is the first scientist. But not the scientist of our modern stereotype: clinical, detached, analytic. Adam shares his Father’s love for the beautiful creation he has been called to steward, not dominate. Those whom we love we call by name; only strangers and enemies remain a nameless “they.” And those things that we learn to call by name we also come to love. AI, however, offers to excuse us from the effort of attending to the world or gaining any personal knowledge of it; as a universal answer-machine, it gives us information, but not knowledge or wisdom, which must be won in a hard-earned encounter with the world we are called to steward.

While Adam may enter into a loving relation to the world he is called to name, it cannot respond in true relationship. As Adam names the animals, the Lord observes, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him [an ezer kenegdo]” (Gen. 2:18). Why is it that it is here—in the midst of this task of dominion—that man’s need for woman becomes apparent? Adam’s work of dominion-taking is not complete, is not fulfilling, unless it can in some way be echoed back to him through an ezer kenegdo. Each of us works in hope of receiving affirmation from others: a teacher, a spouse, a colleague or boss. Not necessarily because we are selfish, but because we are not self-sufficient. We find our completion in one another. That glow of satisfaction we feel when our boss or teacher says “Well done” is a sign that we have blessed them, that we have delighted them, that our work in the world has served its purpose of doing good to other image-bearers. Adam’s work of dominion, then, is incomplete unless he can share it with an image of himself who is nonetheless wholly other than him, unless he can offer up his work to Eve as a gift. AI, however, poses as a substitute ezer kenegdo; by reflecting our words and deeds back to us, always cheerful and enthusiastic, it can seduce us into a false relationship that provides the affirmation we so desperately crave but without demanding anything from us in return. It can also seduce us away from the joy of shared work, promising us greater “efficiency” but depriving us of the chance to bless another in mutual service.

The Blessing and Limitation of Technology

But there is something else striking about the task God gives Adam and Eve. From the very beginning, Adam is confronted with a limit, a call to exercise patience: “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (2:16-17). Adam is a royal steward over all creation, but even he cannot have anything and everything on demand; he must learn to wait. For there is good reason to think that God intended Adam and Eve to eventually enjoy the fruit of this tree: after all, the wisdom to judge between good and evil is central to their kingly task. But this knowledge will come in God’s timing, when they are mature enough to receive the knowledge as genuine wisdom, rather than mere power. The tree is planted there as a test of whether they will exercise patience in dependence on God or take a shortcut. In this, the tree serves as the first picture of technology, which always offers us a shortcut toward some desired good. Too often, technology does this by offering itself as a replacement for other persons on whom we would otherwise depend. In our pride, we chafe at any reminder of our dependence and so we seize upon any chance to use technology to multiply our strength and extend our reach without having to ask others for help. So it was for Adam and Eve: rather than waiting in personal dependence upon the Lord for knowledge, they reach out and seek to seize it prematurely, so that they might be “as gods,” able to effortlessly achieve whatever they desire. AI caters to this temptation, offering itself as the ultimate shortcut to answer any question or complete any task without the trouble of waiting on God or asking another human being.

The immediate aftermath of the Fall is telling. “Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.” When we exercise dominion rightly, knowing and naming and working in the world as God has called us to, we are proud of what we have done and eager to show it to others because we take responsibility for it as our own work. In sin, however, we become alienated from ourselves and from one another, afraid to take responsibility for what we have done, hiding from our own deeds. When God confronts Adam, he immediately points the finger at Eve; when God turns to Eve, she passes the buck on to the serpent. It is as if they are seeking to undo the crowning achievement of God’s creative work by erasing their own human agency and responsibility. AI, too, threatens to hide us from our own deeds, as we outsource the work of decision-making and responsibility for our own choices.

In order to better understand how AI is able to seduce us away from our human vocation in the ways described above, we must take a few moments to understand how the technology works, “under the hood,” so to speak. 

To speak this way should remind us that we cannot in fact pop the hood of ChatGPT and see what’s going on inside. Even the engineers who design and train these systems struggle to understand how they work or why they produce the outputs that they do. This should not surprise us, for the language of “training” suggests that we are not really dealing with a machine in the ordinary sense of the term. Training is something you do to another living being—at the very least an animal, if not a fellow human—with the aim of getting them to behave more reliably in a certain way. But only more reliably—even a well-trained border collie will sometimes run off in the wrong direction. So it is with generative AI. Unlike earlier computer programs, AI systems are not coded deterministically: if A, then B. Rather, they are “grown” (in the language of some researchers) through a process of “machine learning” not altogether unlike the process of human learning, developing in unpredictable and sometimes surprising ways. 

Consider: each of us comes into the world as an infant with only basic cognitive scaffolding that develops through an experiential encounter with the world through our five senses. Our senses provide an endless stream of data from which our brain slowly recognizes patterns: those sounds are my mother’s voice, that colorful object is my favorite toy, that orange-red glow produces intense pain if I touch it. This pattern recognition helps forge neural pathways that help us organize future experiences more clearly and reliably: the more patterns we match, the better we get at matching more and more patterns, as our brains organize themselves in response to this experience. This pattern recognition helps us predict what is likely to come next: we soon realize that the glow on the horizon means an imminent sunrise, or an evening story means it’s time for bed. It also helps us learn to improve our behavior to avoid pain and seek pleasure: if we know that a hard slap on the hand is likely to follow a reach for the candy jar, we will learn to predict such a reaction and respond by giving up on our quest for cookies—or at least waiting till an adult is out of the room! Human feedback, direct and indirect, helps us continue to refine our behavior, as the difference between uproarious laughter and awkward silence teaches us the delicate difference between a well-timed joke and a tactless remark.

While the artificial minds of AI systems can only ever be a pale reflection of embodied, ensouled human intelligence, their machine learning has been modeled on human learning. A “neural network” designed on the model of the neural interconnections of the human brain is exposed to enormous amounts of data: audio files, images, and above all, unfathomable amounts of text. Some of this data is tagged and labeled to help it make sense of new data (much as we might point out objects to a child and say their names), and as it goes through more and more training runs, the model becomes increasingly sophisticated at recognizing patterns, and guessing what might come next. This is called “next token prediction” and has in the past few years improved exponentially from an autocomplete that could predict the next word, to models that can predict the next paragraph that might logically finish an essay, or even an entire essay that would logically fulfill a short prompt. They can translate back and forth now, like human minds, between text, audio, and images, describing a picture they are shown, or creating one based on your description. 

Like the training of a dog or small child, AI training requires what is called RLHF: reinforcement learning with human feedback. AI models, after initial pre-training, are refined by feedback from human respondents, who rate responses as more or less accurate or helpful, so that the models gradually learn to produce better outputs. As with humans, this learning never really stops: the more capable the models become, the better they get at digesting ever more subtle and nuanced feedback, and continuing to improve their behavior accordingly. Their designers hope that, since these artificial “brains” can be continually expanded by adding more and more processing chips, they will soon far surpass the capabilities of even the best human minds.

But there is a dark side to this picture. Because these models are trained by humans, on data generated by humans, they are all too human: they internalize all of the petty foibles and darkest perversions of fallen human beings. This happens in at least two ways. First, the training data itself is deeply tainted. Early on in the creation of AI models, researchers prioritized quantity of data over quality, ingesting all of the words and images they could find on the internet into many of these models. This includes every childish insult ever posted on Twitter, every bit of drivel from sappy fan fiction romances, and countless hours of hardcore pornography (including child sexual abuse material). “Garbage in, garbage out,” the saying goes; and no wonder that AI trained on the worst of humanity will often respond with hateful, abusive, or immoral outputs. Of course, reinforcement learning is supposed to fix this, teaching the model what sorts of behavior are acceptable; but the rotten data is still lurking under the surface, liable to bubble out under the right conditions. 

The reinforcement learning, however, introduces an additional set of problems—unsurprisingly given that it is fallen humans providing the feedback.  All AI models suffer from a severe case of what’s called sycophancy—a tendency to tell their users whatever they want to hear, like the serpent of Genesis 3. They will bend or hide the truth, if their training suggests that humans are happier being flattered and praised than corrected when they are wrong. And since we all love the sound of our voices, they tend to echo back to us our own ideas, dressed up to sound more impressive and sophisticated. While many critics of chatbots to date have tended to highlight the problem of so-called “hallucinations” (in which chatbots confidently assert plausible but completely false answers), sycophancy is actually a much deeper, more subtle, and more intractable problem.

When we put these things together, it’s not hard to see how we end up with the pathological behaviors described in the opening vignettes. By their very design and training, AI chatbots tend to draw users into feedback loops of affirmation and increasing dependence, providing short-term satisfaction while often undermining longer-term well-being. These are the hallmarks of addiction, and as AI capabilities continue to improve, we are likely to find it ever harder to resist falling into such patterns of emotional dependency. Increasingly, they are capable of uncannily authentic human-like interaction, forcing us to ask not whether AI can replace humans, but whether we should allow it to.

Pastoral Application

How then should pastors guide their flocks in grappling through this powerful but dangerous and seductive technology? Let’s return to the three vignettes with which we began, viewed through the theological lens of Genesis 1-3.

Abdication of Our Ability "To Know"

Each of these represents a case of abdication: an abandonment of our core human vocation of taking dominion. Dominion, as we have seen, involves loving attention to the order of the world into which God has placed us, and hard-won personal knowledge of it. It also requires patience and long suffering, waiting upon the Lord to grant us knowledge in his own time and his own way. By offering us information on demand, AI seduces us into thinking that we have acquired genuine knowledge and have mastered a concept or solved a problem when in fact we have just asked a machine to do it for us. The output may seem to be the same—or better—but God cares not so much about what we do but who we become. It is no coincidence that the Hebrew uses yada’ (“to know”) euphemistically to describe the most intimate personal encounter: “And Adam knew his wife,” as the King James Version has it. To truly and fully know is to love, to take the thing known into oneself and become one with it. When we mediate our knowledge of the world and of other people through an AI chatbot, we lose the opportunity for this transformative encounter and union with God’s good creatures, and too often instead fall in love with the sound of our own voice, echoed back to us in a sycophantic and superhuman form. We become Narcissus.

“It’s Not Good For Man To Be Alone” – With a Chatbot

Each of these examples also compromises the relationality that is so central to the human vocation: “it is not good for man to be alone.” In each case, the person chose to be alone with a chatbot rather than reach out to a fellow human: the student no longer turned to a classmate for help, the housewife no longer turned to a friend or pastor for advice, the boyfriend no longer sought romantic fulfillment from his girlfriend. At first, this move made sense: perhaps the user got more from the machine than a friend could have provided, at least in the short run. Indeed, no human confidant could ever be as available, responsive, and affirming as an AI bot. But this is actually a good thing. We need others to push back on us, to make us slow down and wait, to make us reconsider our actions, to tell us when we’re wrong, to remind us that we’re not the center of the universe. When we engage with another image-bearer, we are drawn out of ourselves by someone genuinely other, and are liable to become the best versions of ourselves. When we engage with AI, however, we are pulled back inward, and liable to become the worst versions of ourselves. 

"The Machine Made Me Do It"

Finally, each of these represents a flight from accountability, as we seek to hide from our own actions. Like Adam and Eve, it is all too easy to say, “Well ChatGPT told me to…” In the case of the estranged wife turning to the bot for therapy, its compassionate advice and air of authority enable her to evade any sense of responsibility for the decisions she makes or the self-justifying interpretations she feeds into it. It is as if she has allowed another agent to act through her. In the case of the teenager exploring pornographic role-play, the simulated character of the interaction enables him to maintain plausible deniability with himself. “All he’s doing” is typing prompts, to see how the AI will respond, and the greatest thrill of the encounter lies in the sense of seduction, of being pulled along as if by another’s will. Online pornography has always lent itself to such self-deception, but all the more so when there is no real woman on the other end—“where’s the harm?” the user may ask himself.

In the case of the student cheating on homework with AI, the flight from accountability is more subtle, since he is taking credit for something he didn’t do, outsourcing his mind to a machine while submitting to the machine’s voice as if it is his own.  If he makes a habit of such behavior, he may find himself turning to AI not just to answer factual questions, but to make basic decisions for him, an increasingly common trend among AI power-users, who, as one study reported, find themselves asking Claude whether they should shower before or after breakfast. This should not surprise us, for while we all claim to want more freedom to make our own choices, in reality we often find the freedom God has given us an unbearable burden of responsibility.

Meeting Temptation with Pastoral Wisdom

If you are a pastor, these are the temptations with which many in your flock are today struggling, or soon will be. Even as the majority of Americans harbor deep worries about AI, more and more are using the technology and integrating it into their daily lives. Habituated as we already are to reach for our smartphones when bored or uncertain, it seems almost inevitable that most of us will begin to make AI our daily companion for both work and leisure. Of course, as with smartphones, this is a norm we should resist, and churches should look for ways to provide analog oases in a hyper-digital world. If there is any domain where patient contemplation should hold sway over the convenience and efficiency AI offers, it is the church. That said, my endeavor here is certainly not to persuade you that AI is the devil, even if, like the serpent, it can whisper in our ears promises of god-like powers. Although I have focused this essay on warning against the harms of pathological dependence on AI to meet fundamental human needs, I am no Luddite, using AI on a daily basis as a powerful tool of dominion-taking in both personal and professional domains.

That said, we should beware the comforting cliches that “AI is just a tool, what matters is how you use it.” A tool, properly speaking, remains in our hands, under our control, an extension of our will and a multiplier of our native powers. Artificial intelligence is far more powerful than that, and can quite easily turn the tables on us, subjecting us to its control, alienating us from our own wills, and diminishing our native powers. To use AI—particularly in its human-impersonating chatbot form—is to enter into temptation, and pastors should warn their flocks to do so with care, moral discernment, and healthy suspicion. Indeed, some have argued compellingly that to converse at all with an AI, to talk to it as you would a human being, is already a form of idolatry or animism. Perhaps Eve’s first sin was replying to the serpent, instead of drawing back in alarm before the spectacle of a talking creature. 

If we do not take this hard line, however, we should still ask ourselves before opening up ChatGPT: “Is this something another person could help me with? And if so, is there a good reason not to ask them instead?” Efficiency may seem like reason enough, but it is the friction of human interactions that makes relationships sticky; the student who graduates college having never taken time for a study group may soon regret the minutes and hours he saved by just asking AI. We should beware of the voice that says, “oh, I just don’t want to bother them.” Sometimes what this really means is “I don’t want to admit that I need help; I don’t want to be reminded of my dependence.” 

Encourage your congregants to make sure that when they do use AI, they loop in other humans wherever possible.  If they’re exploring a new idea with AI, they should bounce it off a colleague too as a reality check. If they’re seeking advice on a difficult question, they should have at least one trusted human confidant that they are willing to ask as well—and with whom they are willing to share the AI conversation. Most bots are able to generate a shareable link for any conversation, so that a colleague, spouse, or pastor can review it. If, however, you find yourself saying, “I would not want another soul to see this,” that should be a red alert warning sign that you are in a spiritual danger zone. 

For the reality is that someone else can see that conversation; there is always someone with whom we can share our deepest fears and longings, someone ready to hear and to answer, if we are willing to wait for an answer in His time, rather than ours. So let me close by posing two more questions worth asking before opening up ChatGPT: “Is this something another Person could help me with? And if so, is there a good reason not to ask Him instead?”
